What Is Raw Wedding Footage and Should You Add It?
Couples researching wedding videography often encounter the term raw wedding footage. But what does it include, and is it worth having?
Raw footage generally refers to the video clips recorded during your wedding before they are transformed into a finished film.
It can preserve significantly more of your day than a short highlight video. Because I believe couples should have access to the memories captured at their wedding, raw footage is included with all of my wedding videography packages at no additional cost.
What is included in raw wedding footage?
Depending on your wedding timeline and selected coverage, raw footage may include:
Getting-ready moments
Venue and décor footage
First looks
Wedding-party interactions
Ceremony coverage
Vows and readings

Every wedding is different, so the exact footage will depend on what happens during your scheduled coverage.
Is raw footage the same as a finished wedding film?
No. Raw footage and an edited wedding film serve different purposes.
Raw wedding footage may contain:
Camera repositioning
Repeated angles
Exposure adjustments
Clips without completed color correction
Unmixed or unedited audio
Longer sections recorded for editing purposes
Footage that has not been arranged into a story
A completed wedding film is carefully selected, organized, color-corrected and edited. Audio, music and visuals are intentionally combined to create a cohesive viewing experience.
Raw footage is valuable because of the additional memories it contains—not because it has the polish or structure of a finished wedding film.
Why is raw footage included in every package?
A highlight film can only contain a small portion of everything recorded during a wedding.
There may be meaningful interactions, complete speeches, extended ceremony moments or candid footage that doesn’t fit naturally into the finished edit. Those moments still belong to the couple.
That is why all of my wedding videography packages include raw footage at no additional cost.
You won’t have to pay an extra fee simply to receive the additional footage captured during your selected coverage hours.
Why would couples want raw wedding footage?
Raw footage may preserve moments such as:
A private conversation with a grandparent
Your parents’ reactions during the ceremony
A complete speech from a family member
A spontaneous moment with your wedding party
Guests enjoying the cocktail hour
Extended dancing and reception footage
Small interactions you didn’t witness personally
A moment that seems ordinary immediately after the wedding may become incredibly meaningful years later.
Some couples may not watch every raw clip right away. However, they appreciate knowing that the additional memories have been preserved and are available whenever they want to revisit them.
Raw footage versus a long-form wedding video
If you want an easy-to-watch account of your wedding, a 30–60-minute documentary film provides a more polished experience than raw footage alone.
A long-form wedding film organizes the important moments into a cohesive story. Raw footage acts as a more complete personal archive containing additional clips from the day.
The two formats work especially well together:
A short Instagram teaser gives you something immediate to share.
A cinematic highlight film captures the emotion of the day.
A 30–60-minute wedding video preserves the fuller story.
Raw footage protects the additional moments that didn’t appear in the edits.
Because raw footage is already included with every package, couples can choose their edited films without worrying about losing the other recorded memories.
How will we receive our raw footage?
Raw footage consists of large video files, so it is typically delivered digitally.
Couples should download their files promptly and create at least one personal backup. Keeping copies in multiple locations—such as an external hard drive and secure cloud storage—can provide additional protection.
Raw footage should be treated as a personal archive. File sizes can be substantial, but the footage may become increasingly valuable over time.
Can we edit or share our raw wedding footage?
Couples can use their footage for personal viewing and create their own favorite clips, subject to the terms of their wedding videography agreement.
However, raw files may not have finished color, stabilized movement or professionally mixed audio. If you want additional polished videos after receiving your films, ask about professional editing options before posting unfinished footage publicly.
